2021.10.17 12:34 TroLLageK I just want to adopt a dog, but these rescues make it so difficult.
Most rescues here are volunteer-based, so your application will take 4-8 weeks to get reviewed. We applied for 5 rescues so far at this point, 3 dogs in particular. One of the rescues which we didn't apply for a specific dog but said we're willing to foster-to-adopt a dog from another country has gotten back to us to confirm our interest, that's about it.
The first dog/rescue we applied to, it was a dog that was posted a week before our application. It's been 2 weeks since the application was submitted, the dog has since been removed from the website/got adopted? But when I applied it said they'd take 4-6 weeks to get our application looked at. So that's pretty upsetting that we didn't even have a chance to adopt the dog we applied for.
To add onto the frustration, our application isn't as "good" as others because we don't have a "backyard". We have a front porch, which we can enclose the doorway area with a metal doggy fence. We're incredibly active people, we have the money/means to get both a dog walker and do doggy daycare if a walker isn't available. We are avid hikers and love exploring the nearby trails. Even if we had a backyard, a backyard shouldn't be your dogs' sole means of exercise (unless your backyard is like, a shit ton of land, sure ok).
I'm just so frustrated. Our options are already limited because it's important to me to have a dog that's nonreactive towards cats... and knowing we just don't even stand a chance to dogs we applied for because our application won't even get looked at until the dog is already gone is upsetting. I'm holding onto hope for this one puppy we applied for, but I would need to wait until the border opens to get her if we're accepted. We submitted the application Thursday, and it's a rescue operated by one person I believe. I'm unsure if I should message her or not and say I can drive down the moment the border opens in 3 weeks.

2021.10.17 12:34 guiderishi [IWantOut] 30M Automotive Engineer US -> Europe
Hello all, I'm originally from India. I moved to the US for graduate school in 2016. After completing master's I joined an automotive company as a systems Engineer and have been working for about 3 years.
I'm currently on H1B visa and my employer will soon start my green card petition. However, I'm having second thoughts on becoming a permanent resident of the US. I think the reasons should be pretty obvious to people in this forum. The political climate to some extent, but more importantly the bad social welfare (or lack of it at all), such as zero PTO mandated by law (my company gives 5 days, which is more insulting than not giving at all imo), terrible health care system, poor work-life balance, sub-standard public transportation, super expensive higher education, etc.
As far as I know, Europe is an excellent place for automotive engineers. Countries like Germany, Sweden, UK have a lot of opportunities in this field. Hence, I believe I should be able to find a decent job.
However, I'm not well versed about the immigration system in European countries. How hard or easy it is compared to the US? Besides, English is the only European language I know. Will it be a big problem? I'm willing to learn another if it's needed.
Finally, I'd like to consider the negative sides of this choice as well. Is there anyone who moved to the Europe from the US and later regretted it? If so, can you please share the reasons?

2021.10.17 12:34 H25azbxwyz Squid Game: The rise of Korean drama addiction
Watch the video in our channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sB0CMJ4zJAg
If watching Squid Game means the prospect of playing red light, green light now fills you with nerve-shredding terror rather than fond childhood memories, you aren't alone.
The Korean thriller, which tells the story of debt-ridden people competing for a huge crash prize in a deadly series of children's games, has become Netflix's biggest ever series launch - streamed by 111 million users in its first 28 days.
In doing so it knocked Bridgerton off the top spot, making clear that Korean dramas -K-dramas for short - have most certainly been given the green light by audiences worldwide.
So, how can we understand this rise, and what are some of the other K-dramas to look out for if you're a new convert?
Squid Game's breakthrough popularity marks the latest wave in a Korean culture tsunami that's built throughout the West in recent years.
The show joins K-pop artists such as BTS and Blackpink, who have become household names in music, and films like Parasite and Minari, which achieved Hollywood recognition and Oscars success.
But the K-drama takeover is far from the overnight sensation it may first seem.
Although they've only recently gripped worldwide audiences, K-dramas have been popular in Asia for decades.
Increasing liberalisation throughout the country in the 90s saw huge amounts of money poured into the entertainment industry. As Japan battled economic decline and China rose, South Korean culture pounced - offering TV that was both more relatable than US shows and morally palatable to Beijing.
Over the next decade it challenged Japanese might to become a new purveyor of Asian cool, with 20% of viewers in Japan watching 2003 drama Winter Sonata.
A 2011 report by the Korean Culture and Information Service concluded: "In many Asian cities, Korean dramas seem to be influencing lifestyles and consumer behaviour, which speaks to their cultural appeal."
Global interest grew(...)
